Mbedza Projects Support plants trees in the Zomba area of Malawi
Malawi is one of the economically poorest countries in the world. In the area where we work our baseline surveys indicated that average household incomes are $0.60 per household per day. Developing countries like Malawi are adversely affected by climate change and least able to deal with its effects on their social, economic and natural systems.
Malawi is heading toward environmental unsustainability and according to a research paper (2013) at current rates of deforestation Malawi will be without trees by 2033.
Working with the Forestry Research Institute of Malawi, we are working on a tree planting project to help Malawians address the environmental crisis that they face by training villagers to grow their own tree nurseries, plant sustainable wood lots and protect and restore existing trees and wooded areas through agroforestry.
Climate change is a serious issue affecting us all. Increased human activity is pushing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, creating global warming on a huge scale and it is this which is driving climate change.
The ongoing effects of climate change include increased frequency of extreme weather events, flooding, high winds, drought, rising sea levels, loss of crops, displacement of people, loss of ecosystems and species extinction. Therefore climate change has a massive impact on both human and natural systems across the world, with the poorest and most vulnerable communities suffering the most.

WHY PLANT TREES?
We need to act now and take responsibility to stop irreparable damage to our world. Through our everyday actions we create our own unique carbon footprint. The average individual carbon footprint in the UK is 7 tonnes of CO2 per year and the average individual carbon footprint in Malawi is 0.1 tonnes of CO2 per year. We can all do two things:
Reduce our carbon footprints.
Mitigate the impact of our carbon footprint by planting trees.
Planting trees in Malawi not only helps those suffering directly from the effects of climate change but can help to rebuild whole ecosystems and restore our planet to its natural beauty.
Examples of carbon mitigation by our supporters:
Our UK Director travelled to Australia with his wife and calculated that their carbon footprint was 15.2 tonnes. Using our mitigation calculator planting 180 trees would mitigate 15.2 tonnes in five years.
One of our supporters from York travelled this summer for a holiday to Portugal. The carbon footprint was 0.73 tonnes. Using our mitigation calculator planting 30 trees would mitigate the 0.73 tonnes in 2 years.
At our board of trustees meeting held in May we calculated that the carbon footprint of all the travel to get to Sheffield was 0.4 tonnes. Using our mitigation calculator planting 16 trees would mitigate the 0.4 tonnes in 2 years.
An 11-16 Secondary School of 1000 students asked us what it would take to mitigate the carbon footprint of their energy consumption. It will take planting 5600 trees/year for five years to reach carbon neutral costing around £1800/year.
